From our Headmaster, Matt Tarpley, EdS:
From Bullied to Buoyant About School!
“One of the greatest things about my job is talking with our parents. Recently, I had a parent share this story with me.
The other day here at the school one of our awesome volunteer parents, I’ll call her, “Tammy,” was in the building when her 13 year old son did something inappropriate. She was upset, and like most moms would do, she confronted him.
“‘Richard’ (not his real name)! Why would you do that? You know better, and I know you know better,” she cried.
Her son promptly shut down, refusing to respond, which upset the parent even more.
At this point one of our amazing teachers stepped in. It took just a few minutes, and soon the student had acknowledged his inappropriate actions and returned to class.
The parent was amazed at how well her son responded to the teacher. She quickly realized how her own actions might have contributed to her son’s response at that time.
“I’m so thankful for Aurora and the teachers here. They are professional, and caring… and they love their work and these kids,” she said as she wiped the tears away. “At other schools, we’ve had so many disappointments, that both he and I felt defeated. At Aurora, I’ve seen his confidence begin to come back. He is learning and making friends. The teachers listen and ask parents questions when needed… they know we know our children best.”
“It is such a positive environment that my child, who had to hide in the bathroom of one school to keep away from bullies, loves to go to school and hates to leave!”
As she told her story, I was reminded of how amazing our teachers and staff really are!
Now it really does feel like Christmas.
